• 11315 articleBody " <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--text paragraph--view-mode--full"> <h2>Sint-Machariusparochie en Ganda</h2> <p>Op het grondgebied van wat nu de Sint-Machariusparochie is, floreerde al in de Gallo-Romeinse periode een gemeenschap.</p> <p>In 629-639 kwam Sint-Amandus, een zendeling uit Aquitanië, deze gemeenschap kerstenen en stichtte daar een kerk (basilica). Deze was gewijd aan de Heilige Petrus. Het was naar die plek dat het gebeente werd overgebracht van de adellijke grondbezitter uit Haspengouw, Adlowinus. Hij was een gezel van Amandus op diens missietochten. Deze Adlowinus, die zich in de zevende eeuw als kluizenaar in de buurt van Gent had gevestigd, nam als kloosternaam ‘<strong>Bavo</strong>’ aan. Na zijn dood kwam rond zijn nieuwe graf in de kerk van Ganda al snel een heiligencultus tot bloei.</p> <p>Nog voor het einde van de zevende eeuw, groeide - wellicht uit de clerus van de basilica - een <strong>kloostergemeenschap</strong> die zich gestaag uitbreidde.</p> <p>De Sint-Baafsabdij (oorspronkelijk zelf ‘Ganda’ genoemd) kende een bewogen geschiedenis. Aan de opgang van de abdij kwam een eerste keer abrupt een einde met de invallen van de noormannen, in de 9de eeuw. Toen Karel de Grote in 811 de vloot kwam inspecteren, die hij tegen de noormannen samentrok in Ganda, verbleef hij wellicht in de abdij. De vloot bleek echter geen partij voor de oprukkende noormannen en in 851 staken zij de abdij in brand.</p> <p>Een eeuw later werd de abdijkerk, onder impuls van de Graaf van Vlaanderen, Arnulf De Grote, heropgebouwd. Ze groeide uit tot een van de machtigste in Vlaanderen. De abdij, met de grootste refter uit die periode, werd een bekend bedevaartsoord waar niet alleen de relieken werden vereerd van Sint-Bavo maar ook van Sint-Livinus en Sint-Macharius.</p> <p>Met de rebellie van de Gentenaars tegen Keizer Karel V viel het doek definitief over de luisterrijke abdij: in de nasleep van de zgn. Carolijnse concessie van 1540, waarbij de stad haar zelfstandigheid erbij inschoot, gaf deze keizer opdracht om het klooster grotendeels af te breken en te vervangen door een dwangburcht met bastions en vestigingsmuren en -grachten, die de Gentenaars smalend het ‘Spanjaardenkasteel’ noemden. De Spanjaardenburcht verloor zijn functie toen er, omstreeks 1830, een nieuwe citadel ten zuiden van de stad werd in gebruik genomen.</p> <p>Centraal in de nieuwe verkaveling kwam er een veemarkt die later werd overdekt, en ook een slachthuis.</p> <h2>Heernesse en Coyendans</h2> <p>De Heernesse (schaapweide) was een uitgestrekt meersgebied langs de Schelde vanaf de huidige Achtervisserij tot de grens van Sint-Amandsberg met Destelbergen in het Oosten. Dit gebied was opgedeeld in een grote en een kleine Heernesse.</p> <p>De bewoners van het Sint-Baafsdorp hadden weiderecht op de Heernesse. Het beheer hiervan werd daarom waargenomen door 4 heernismeesters. Zij stelden een bekwame herder aan. Deze herder dreef elke morgen de heerniskoeien uit het Sint-Baafsdorp naar de Heernesse en bracht ze 's avonds terug.</p> <p>Uit 18e eeuwse bronnen vernemen we dat elk jaar op de Heernisberg het feest van de Coyendans werd gevierd. De heernismeesters moesten jaarlijks rekenschap geven van inkomsten en uitgaven. Het overschot werd besteed aan "het feest van de Heernesse : de Coyendans". De twee etalages binnenin kunnen door de buurt gebruikt worden, bijvoorbeeld als toonplek. Kioskiosk wordt een rustplek langs de fietsroute in het Bloemekenspark, een paviljoen dat beschutting biedt en ook de natuur binnenlaat.</span></p> <p><span>Olivier Goethals (1980) woont en werkt in Gent. Hij studeerde architectuur en stedenbouw en maakt zowel architecturale ingrepen als artistiek werk waarmee hij de verbanden onderzoekt tussen ruimte en bewustzijn. De artiest met Gentse roots werkt in alle anonimiteit terwijl zijn werken overal ter wereld terug te vinden zijn. Begonnen in 2017 is haar werk vandaag terug te vinden van België tot Portugal en Dubai.
