<h2>Affichecollectie politiearchief<a id="affichecollectie" name="Affichecollectie"></a></h2> <p><span><span><span><strong>Archief Gent </strong>bewaart een <strong>rijke collectie affiches</strong>. Het grootste deel komt uit het <strong>archief van de stedelijke politie</strong>. Dat danken we een reglement uit 1856. Wie in Gent een affiche aanplakte, moest een bewijsexemplaar deponeren op het centraal politiebureau aan de Poeljemarkt. Daar kreeg de affiche een datumstempel, een volgnummer en een plaatsje in een register. Deze praktijk duurde tot 1961. Later werd de hele collectie overgedragen aan het stadsarchief.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Het gaat om <strong>25.000 affiches</strong> uit de periodes <strong>1881-1910 </strong>en<strong> 1938-1961. </strong>Voor de tussenliggende periode 1911-1937 zijn geen affiches bewaard. Het gaat voornamelijk om aankondigingen van openbare verkopingen, theater- en operavoorstellingen, sportwedstrijden en dus ook filmvertoningen. </span></span></span></p> <h2>Belgische filmaffiches<a id="filmaffiches" name="Filmaffiches"></a></h2> <p><span><span><span>De collectie telt liefst <strong>9.000 filmaffiches</strong>. Enkele (tekst)affiches dateren uit de beginjaren van de cinematografie vanaf 1896, maar de collectie start pas echt in 1938 en loopt tot 1961. Van de meeste films uit die periode is een affiche bewaard, vaak zelfs in meerdere exemplaren, omdat dezelfde film in verschillende zalen na elkaar speelde, waarvoor telkens een nieuwe affiche werd uitgehangen. De cinema’s kregen van de filmdistributeur naast de film zelf ook de affiches, die bij een gespecialiseerde reclamedrukker in het Brusselse werden gedrukt. Op de blanco strook bovenaan door affiche kon de naam van de cinema, samen met andere gegevens zoals het adres of de speelweek, worden gedrukt door een lokale drukker.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Hoewel de posters vooral Amerikaanse, Duitse en Franse films aanprijzen, werden ze specifiek voor het Belgische filmpubliek gemaakt. Pas vanaf 1956 verscheen geleidelijk ook de originele filmposter uit het productieland van de film in het Gentse straatbeeld. Voor de <strong>Belgische filmaffiches</strong> deden de drukkers een beroep op tekenaars en typografen om het promomateriaal van de filmdistributeurs naar een lokale context te vertalen. Letterlijk, door een Franse en Nederlandse vertaling van de filmtitel aan de affiche toe te voegen, maar ook figuurlijk, door een ‘Belgische’ tekenstijl en vormgeving. Dat gebeurde ook in andere landen, maar de Belgische filmposters waren superieur van kwaliteit. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>België had <strong>heel goede</strong> <strong>tekenaars</strong>, die niet alleen in strips, maar ook in filmaffiches hun meesterschap in de ‘klare lijn’ demonstreerden. De meesten werkte anoniem, omdat filmaffiches nu eenmaal meer als een commercieel (wegwerp)product werd beschouwd dan als artistieke creatie. Onder degenen die hun werk wél signeerden zijn enkele bekende namen, zoals René Magritte, die in de jaren dertig ook filmaffiches ontwierp onder het pseudoniem Emair. Andere anonieme, maar getalenteerde tekenaars kregen pas later erkenning via interviews of tentoonstellingen van hun werk.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Dankzij de decennialange deponering van filmaffiches bij de stedelijke politie heeft Archief Gent waarschijnlijk de <strong>grootste publieke collectie </strong>van Belgische filmaffiches uit de periode van 1938 tot 1961 in huis. Een gelijkaardige, maar kleinere collectie, die vooral de jaren 1930 documenteert, bevindt zich in het Stadsarchief Leuven (<a href="http://www.cinemaleuven.be">http://www.cinemaleuven.be</a>). Cinematek, het Belgisch Koninklijk Filmarchief in Brussel, bewaart vooral filmposters uit het laatste kwart van de twintigste eeuw (nog niet online toegankelijk).</span></span></span></p> </div> <div archiefmedewerkers </strong>van Archief Gent<strong> </strong>onder leiding van collectiebeheerder Guy Dupont deze collectie onder handen genomen. Alle filmaffiches werden passend <strong>verpakt</strong>, <strong>geïnventariseerd</strong>, <strong>beschreven</strong> en <strong>gedigitaliseerd</strong> op de A0-scanner in eigen huis. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>8500 filmaffiches zijn nu al digitaal toegankelijk via de <a href="https://beeldbank.stad.gent/index.php/search?q%5B%5D=filmaffiches&q%5B%5D=&csid=613614d0c36d3&view=&limit=&sort=OriginalFilename_ASC&per_page=0&sd=&ed=">Beeldbank Gent</a>. Voor deze tentoonstelling werden meer dan <strong>150 iconische filmaffiches</strong> geselecteerd en op ware grootte gereproduceerd op magneetvellen. Hiermee werden de stalen kolommen van De Krook bekleed. De fragiele originele affiches op papier worden intussen veilig en duurzaam bewaard in de depots van Archief Gent.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>In een ‘straat’ met kijkkasten waren ook enkele originele filmaffiches te zien, naast een boeiende selectie van ander <strong>origineel publiciteitsmateriaal,</strong> afkomstig uit <strong>privécollecties</strong>, zoals affichettes of miniatuuraffiches, plooifolders en filmmagazines. Een van de blikvangers was een maquette van de Capitool, het paradepaardje van de Gentse cinema’s. Winkeliers konden die in hun uitstalraam zetten en elke week een nieuwe <em>calicot</em> of geveltekening van de film die speelde, voor de gevel schuiven.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>De expo zoomde ook in op het <strong>rijke Gentse cinemalandschap</strong> tijdens de gouden jaren dertig, veertig en vijftig. Van luxueuze filmpaleizen tot bescheiden buurtcinema’s, er was toen voor elke filmliefhebber wat wils. In de <strong>filmhoek</strong> kon je de documentaire <em>Entracte</em> (1995) van Patrick Schlich over de verdwenen Gentse bioscopen bekijken of de reportage van VRT-producer Rik Stallaerts uit 1996 over de tekenaars van Belgische filmaffiches.</span></span></span></p> </div> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--text paragraph--view-mode--full"> <h2>Boek "Gent filmstad"<a id="boek" name="Boek"></a> </h2> <p><span><span><span>Als kers op de taart stelde Archief Gent op <strong>14 oktober 2021</strong>, tijdens Film Fest Gent, het boek <strong><em>Gent filmstad: cinema's en filmaffiches 1938-1961</em></strong><em> </em>(Uitgeverij Houtekiet) voor. Auteurs <strong>Lies Van de Vijver, Guy Dupont </strong>en<strong> Roel Vande Winkel </strong>schreven samen een prachtig naslagwerk over filmcultuur, filmzalen en filmaffiches in Gent tijdens de ‘gouden jaren’ van de cinema. Die worden gekaderd in het bredere verhaal van 125 jaar Gentse cinema. Het boek is rijkelijk geïllustreerd met foto’s, bouwplannen en uiteraard ook filmaffiches uit de collectie van Archief Gent, maar ook met uniek beeldmateriaal uit privécollecties.
