That’s why we engage in collaboration at local, regional and international levels.</span></p><p><span lang="EN-GB">These <strong>complex challenges</strong> can only be addressed effectively by <strong>joining forces</strong>. Cities and local governments hold a unique position: they are where citizens, civil society, knowledge institutions and businesses converge, and where change begins.</span></p><h2><span lang="EN-GB">Collaboration pays off</span><span lang="EN-GB"></span></h2><p><span lang="EN-GB">Across Europe and beyond, cities are playing an increasingly prominent role. By working with other local authorities, governments and organizations across borders, Ghent can exchange <strong>knowledge</strong> and respond more <strong>effectively</strong> to shared challenges. Where relevant, we coordinate these efforts with stakeholders in Ghent. This collaboration not only supports the <strong>achievement of</strong> <strong>local policy goals</strong> but also strengthens Ghent’s <strong>position</strong> internationally. </span></p><p><span lang="EN-GB">What began as a clear vision is now translating into <strong>tangible results</strong>. For example, the City of Ghent has enjoyed numerous exciting international collaborations through </span><a href="https://stad.gent/en/city-governance-organisation/city-policy/ghent-international/funded-projects"><span lang="EN-GB">European funded projects</span></a><span lang="EN-GB">, won international awards such as </span><a href="https://www.ghenteyc.eu/nl/"><span lang="EN-GB">European Youth Capital 2024</span></a><span lang="EN-GB"> and the European Heritage/Europa Nostra Award, and built a strong international reputation in various policy areas.</span></p><h2><span lang="EN-GB">The power of networks</span><span lang="EN-GB"></span></h2><p><span lang="EN-GB">International cooperation is not a goal in itself, but a strategic tool that local governments can use to advance policy objectives across various domains. Whether it’s mobility, culture, welfare or economy: Ghent actively engages with international partners to exchange ideas, gain <strong>inspiration</strong> and knowledge and build meaningful collaborations.</span></p><p><span lang="EN-GB">International networks play a key role in this process. They connect cities around <strong>shared urban challenges</strong> and offer <strong>valuable contacts</strong>. The City of Ghent is currently a member of more than 40 European and international networks, with each membership being a conscious choice and regularly evaluated.</span></p><p><span lang="EN-GB">One of the most important networks in which the City of Ghent is active is </span><a href="https://eurocities.eu/"><span lang="EN-GB"><strong>Eurocities</strong></span></a><span lang="EN-GB">, the largest city network in Europe. Within Eurocities, cities collaborate on a wide range of policy themes, exchange experiences and best practices, and advocate for the interests of cities within European institutions. Ghent has been a member since 1998 and currently holds the </span><a href="https://stad.gent/en/city-governance-organisation/news-events/ghent-new-president-eurocities-europes-largest-city-network"><span lang="EN-GB">presidency</span></a><span lang="EN-GB">, a role through which it contributes to shaping European policy.</span></p><p><span lang="EN-GB">Ghent also maintains close ties with its neighbours in <strong>Zeeland</strong> (Netherlands). Since 2021, the City has been active within the </span><a href="https://www.nspd.eu/"><span lang="EN-GB"><strong>North Sea Port District</strong></span></a><span lang="EN-GB"><strong> (NSPD)</strong>, a cross-border partnership between the Zeeland municipalities of Terneuzen, Vlissingen, and Borsele, the East Flemish municipalities of Evergem, Zelzate, and Ghent, and the provinces of Zeeland and East Flanders.
