Detailed metering and digital monitoring help identify and address unnecessary consumption, leaks and technical issues at an early stage.</span></p><p><span lang="EN-GB"></span></p><p><span lang="EN-GB">The project covers hundreds of electricity, gas, heat and water metering points in the city’s highest-consuming buildings. Digital meters automatically transmit consumption data to a <strong>central platform</strong>, providing city services with clear insights into when and where energy and water are used and where savings opportunities exist.</span></p><p><span lang="EN-GB"></span></p><p><span lang="EN-GB">These insights enable the city to take <strong>targeted measures to reduce energy and water use</strong>, maintain occupant comfort and <strong>keep utility costs under control</strong>. This not only contributes to the city’s sustainability and climate goals but also promotes the efficient use of public resources.</span></p><h2><span lang="EN-GB"><strong>Research</strong></span></h2><p><span lang="EN-GB">The collected data are enriched with information on buildings and their technical systems. In collaboration with knowledge institutions, these data are analysed to uncover <strong>new opportunities for energy and water savings</strong>. The resulting insights are translated into concrete actions, practical tools and more sustainable management of the city's building portfolio.</span></p><h2><span lang="EN-GB"><strong>Smarter buildings for a smarter city</strong></span></h2><p><span lang="EN-GB">Through this project, the City of Ghent is taking another step towards becoming a <strong>smart and future-ready city</strong>. The monitoring system is designed to integrate with smart energy technologies. This will enable <strong>more efficient energy management</strong> and support the intelligent control of energy flows within buildings, helping to reduce energy costs while maintaining a comfortable and healthy indoor environment for building users.</span></p><h2><span lang="EN-GB"><strong>Sharing knowledge, maximising impact</strong></span></h2><p><span lang="EN-GB">The results of the project will be actively shared. Citizens, visitors and users of city buildings will gain insight into the measures taken and the savings achieved.
