Centraal in het ontwerp stonden meer groen, duurzaam waterbeheer en verkeersveiligheid.</p><h3><strong>Groene straten en 150 nieuwe bomen</strong></h3><p>Oude kasseien en versleten asfalt maakten plaats voor een nieuwe rijweg in asfalt, comfortabele voetpaden en parkeerstroken in kasseien. Grote plantvakken, geveltuinen, grasstroken en maar liefst 150 nieuwe bomen zorgen voor een pak meer groen in de straten. Nu al zijn 92 nieuwe bomen geplant. Komende winter volgen er nog zo’n 60. Ook bestaande bomen kregen meer ruimte om te groeien.</p><p>Buurtbewoners kunnen een plantvak adopteren en helpen bij het onderhoud. Wie dat wou, kon tijdens de werken een geveltuin laten aanleggen. Het extra groen verhoogt de biodiversiteit, biedt voedsel aan vogels en insecten, en zorgt voor schaduw op warme dagen.</p> </div> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--image paragraph--view-mode--full"> <h3><strong>Slim waterbeheer en een groen woonerf </strong></h3><p>In de hele wijk zijn waterdoorlatende materialen gebruikt, zoals grasvoegen tussen kasseien en waterdoorlatende betonstenen. Regenwater kan hier langzaam in de bodem dringen. Dat ontlast de riolering bij hevige neerslag.</p><p>Ook in het midden van de tweesporenweg in de Jozef de Veusterstraat en de Kraaidam ligt een strook kasseien met grasvoegen die regenwater doorlaten. In deze straten is het klassieke straatbeeld vervangen door een woonerf. Voetgangers en fietsers hebben er voorrang en de snelheid is beperkt tot 20 km/u. Infiltratiekommen en groenzones zorgen ook hier voor tijdelijke opvang van regenwater en extra groen. </p><p>In de buurt ligt nu ook een nieuw gescheiden rioleringsstelsel. nu veiliger en kindvriendelijk ingericht met snelheidsremmende maatregelen, brede voetpaden, zitbanken en spelprikkels.</p><p>De ‘<a href="https://stad.gent/nl/zuurstof-voor-de-brugse-poort/de-rode-loper">rode loper’</a> – een veilige, verkeersluwe wandelroute die al door de Brugse Poort liep – loopt nu via de Druifstraat verder richting het natuurgebied Bourgoyen-Ossemeersen.
