The City will receive one million dollars to set up a digital platform that proactively informs Ghentians and ensures that they do not miss out on allowances or discounts to which they are entitled.</strong></span></p><p><span lang="EN-GB">The Mayors Challenge is an international competition in which cities are challenged to come up with innovative ideas for urban issues. It is an initiative of Bloomberg Philanthropies, the philanthropic organisation of American politician and businessman Michael R. Bloomberg.</span></p><p><span lang="EN-GB">A total of 630 cities submitted a proposal. Ghent submitted an idea on proactive service delivery and, as one of the finalists, was allowed to further refine that proposal during a workshop event in Bogota, Colombia. With this refined proposal, Ghent was announced today as one of the 24 winners. The City will receive one million dollars to implement its proposal over the next two years.</span></p><h2><span lang="EN-GB"><strong>Reducing administrative burdens</strong></span></h2><p><span lang="EN-GB">With the winning project, the City wants to support residents even more proactively during important life events, such as moving house, experiencing a bereavement, or starting school. Together with digital partner District09, the City is launching a digital platform for Ghent residents who are expecting a child. Expecting parents will find all relevant information about services from all levels of government on the platform, as well as the allowances and discounts they may be entitled to. It will also be examined whether these discounts can be granted automatically, as is already often the case in Ghent.</span></p><p><span lang="EN-GB">With the pilot project, the City wants to reduce administrative burdens for (vulnerable) young parents, but the platform should also become a blueprint for support during other important life events.
