Via getuigenissen en archiefstukken wordt het verhaal verteld van de 'poeierkes', de verslavende pijnstillers die tot in de jaren 80 werden gebruikt. De expo kwam tot stand op initiatief van theatermaker Helena Elshout – zelf nakomeling van een producent van zo'n zenuwpoeder.</strong></p><p>De zogenaamde 'poeierkes' waren oppeppende en verslavende pijnstillers van onder andere Dr. Mann, Het Witte Kruis en Perdolan die tot in de jaren 80 werden ingenomen bij pijn, stress en andere ongemakken. Niet zonder gevaar: veel mensen raakten eraan verslaafd en ondervonden ernstige nierschade. Theatermaker Helena Elshout, zelf nakomeling van poederproducent Het Witte Kruis, bouwde er een voorstelling rond. In samenwerking met het Industriemuseum en andere partners leidde dat nu ook tot de expo 'Powder to the people'.</p><p>Voor de expo haalde het Industriemuseum niet alleen tal van poederdoosjes, affiches en emailborden uit de opslagruimtes, het museum deed ook een oproep naar verhalen. Dat resulteerde in meer dan 100 anekdotes, te zien op de introwand in het begin van de tentoonstelling. Van de begrafenisondernemer die op vraag van de familie een poederdoosje in de kist legt tot kinderen die poedertjes 'onder de toog' kopen bij de kruidenier.</p> </div> <div class="paragraph Getuigenissen van onder meer voormalig staatssecretaris voor Volksgezondheid Wivina De Meester en de Gentse textielarbeidster Linda Calle, die bij elke shift met collega's een poedertje innam, zetten het verhaal kracht bij.
